Yara Shahidi to end ‘Grown-ish’ after 6 seasons in a grand style
The sixth and final season of Grown-ish will air in two parts, beginning this summer, on Freeform
Freeform’s popular series, “grown-ish,” is set to come to a close with its upcoming sixth season, which will be split into two parts. Yara Shahidi, who stars in the show and originated the character of Zoey on its parent series “black-ish,” shared the news with fans in a heartfelt video posted on YouTube
She expressed her gratitude to the show’s loyal fans who have been with them since season 1, saying that it has been an honor to play Zoey and grow up alongside her over the past nine years. Shahidi also revealed that the sixth and final season of “grown-ish” will hit a significant milestone, as it will be the show’s 100th episode.
“Hey grown-ish fam, it’s Yara, and I wanted to share the news with you guys, our day ones, that season 6 of grown-ish will be our final season,” she shared in a YouTube video. “But don’t be sad, because we’re going to do it up big.”
She continued: “This season will air in two parts. The first half will premiere this summer, and the second half will be coming in 2024, which means you still have a full year with the crew at Cal U.”
But Shahidi assured fans that there’s still a lot to look forward to in the show’s final season. They will have some amazing guest stars joining them, including Lil Yachty, and Anderson. Paak, and The Free Nationals, among others, which she promised to share soon. And with the season airing in two parts, fans will have the chance to savor the show’s final moments over the course of a year.
Kenya Barris, the creator and executive producer of the -ish universe, also shared his thoughts on the ending of “grown-ish” ahead of “black-ish” airing its final episode after eight seasons on ABC. He said that it has been an amazing journey, and to watch Yara, Marcus Scribner, and the entire “grown-ish” family grow up in front of them over the past several years has been a joy and an honor.
Barris added that he could not be more proud of everything they’ve accomplished and the -ish family he’s been a part of, from the stories they’ve told to the talent they’ve fostered and the memories they’ve made.
“Grown-ish” premiered in January 2018 and followed Zoey’s college years. In season 5, Scribner’s Junior took over the lead role after Zoey graduated from college, but Shahidi continued to appear in the series. The show also stars Trevor Jackson, Diggy Simmons, and Daniella Perkins.
Fans of “grown-ish” can catch up on the first five seasons of the show now streaming on Hulu.
The first part of the final season of “grown-ish” is set to premiere this summer, with the second part airing in 2024. While it’s always sad to say goodbye to a beloved show, fans of “grown-ish” can take comfort in the fact that the show’s creators are planning to end it on a high note, and fans can expect a fitting send-off for the beloved characters they’ve come to know and love over the past six seasons.
