Ellen Pompeo to step back from Grey’s Anatomy

Ellen Pompeo will reportedly appear in less than half of the episodes of ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘ in the upcoming season. Instead, she will executive produce and star in a new Hulu limited series.

Ellen Pompeo has agreed to appear in a new television series, which will significantly influence her part in Grey’s Anatomy. According to TVLine and Variety, the 52-year-old actress will executive produce and appear in an orphan-themed limited series on Hulu.

This means Ellen will reportedly feature in only 8 of the 20-23 episodes planned for Grey’s Anatomy Season 19, which begins on October 6. She will continue to narrate each episode and serve as an executive producer on the medical drama. Still, there will be far fewer Dr. Meredith Greys than ever before.

According to TVLine, Ellen’s upcoming program is “based on the true story of a Midwestern couple who adopts what they assume to be an 8-year-old girl with a rare form of dwarfism.” However, as they continue to raise her alongside their three biological children, they begin to suspect she may not be who she claims to be. As they investigate her tale, they are confronted with difficult questions regarding the lengths they are willing to go to defend themselves, resulting in a struggle fought in the tabloids, the courtroom, and, eventually, their marriage.”

The series will be eight episodes long, with Katie Robbins writing and producing alongside Ellen.

This is game-changing news for Grey’s Anatomy’s future. Ellen has been the show’s main star since its inception in 2005. However, the actress has since expressed a desire to leave the show permanently. “I mean, I’ve been trying to get away for years,” she said to Entertainment Tonight during the Emmys in 2021. “I’ve been attempting. It’s not because I haven’t tried. I have excellent contacts at the network, and they have been really generous to me, incentivizing me to stay.” “Miraculously,” she continued, “we keep coming up with methods to have a cause to stay, and if there’s a reason, that warrants it.

With Meredith’s departure, the other doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial will have to step up their game in the coming season. The new season will see the return of stars Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Kevin McKidd, Caterina Scorsone, Camilla Luddington, Kelly McCreary, Kim Raver, and Chris Carmack. Harry Shum Jr., Alexis Floyd, Niko Terho, and other new cast members have been confirmed.
