Soccer Legend Diego Maradona’s Face Could Be Put on Argentinean Pesos
iego Maradona’s image could be set to appear on Argentine currency.
Argentine Sen. Norma Durango presented a bill Monday that would put the late Maradona’s face on one side of the 1,000-peso ($12) note and a picture of one of his most iconic goals on the other side.
“The idea is not just to recognize our most important idol, but also to think of the economic question,” Durango said, according to BBC News. “We feel that when tourists come here they will want to take a ‘Maradona’ away with them.”
The proposal is expected to be heard by Argentine lawmakers early next year.
The bill suggests Maradona’s second goal against England at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico – known as the “Goal of the Century” – should be featured on the banknote, according to a report from Argentina’s La Nacion.
Maradona died of a heart attack at his home Nov. 25 at the age of 60.
