Kendrick Lamar Wins Six BET Hip Hop Awards
The rapper won artist of the year and album of the year for ‘Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.’
Kendrick Lamar won six awards at the 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards, including artist of the year and album of the year for Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in May.
The awards show, which was taped on Friday, Sept. 30 at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Centre, aired on BET, BET Her, MTV2, and VH1 on Tuesday, Oct. 4.
In addition, Lamar was named lyricist of the year and the best live performer. He also won best hip hop video for “Family Ties” with Baby Keem, as well as video director of the year with Dave Free.
This was Lamar’s ninth award for lyricist of the year, more than anybody else in the show’s history (which originated in 2006). This was his third win for hip-hop album of the year, tying him for the most victories in the category with T.I. and Jay-Z. It was also his third award for best hip-hop video, best live performer, and hip-hop artist of the year.
Drake won three prizes, including outstanding collaboration for “Wait For U,” which he co-wrote with Future and Tems. In May, the mega single debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Song of the year was Latto’s “Big Energy,” which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Lizzo’s “About Damn Time,” which topped the Hot 100 for two weeks in July and August, won the impact track. That award is for the song that “moves our culture forward with social commentary, political discourse or other thought-provoking lyrics.” “About Damn Time” also won in the roughly equivalent category, video for good, at the MTV Video Music Awards.
GloRilla (birth name: Gloria Woods) was named the best-emerging hip-hop artist. She is the fourth female artist to win in that category, after Nicki Minaj (2010), Iggy Azalea (2014), and Cardi B (2016). (2017). GloRilla’s “Tomorrow 2” (a collaboration with Cardi B) is the No. 9 new entry on this week’s Hot 100.
Trina was awarded the I Am Hip Hop Award. She is the fourth female artist or group to get the award, following Salt-N-Pepa in 2010, MC Lyte in 2013, and Lil’ Kim in 2014. (2019).
