The Blackening’s release date has been set by Lionsgate
Tim Story’s genre-bending movie about Black friends at the mercy of a twisted killer will roll out over Juneteenth weekend.
There is a date for the Lionsgate release of The Blackening by Tim Story.
On June 16, 2023, or Juneteenth weekend, a horror comedy resembling Scream about Black friends enjoying Juneteenth on a weekend trip who wind up stranded in a secluded cabin and at the mercy of a sick killer will be widely released in theatres.
In the satirical horror film The Blackening, directed by Story and written by Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins, the subject of who perishes first is posed. The MRC-financed film, which was the subject of a bidding battle, made its debut as part of the midnight madness sidebar at the Toronto Film Festival.
The Blackening expands the viral popular comedy sketch of the same name from 3Peat from 2018 that parodies horror film clichés by depicting Black friends trapped in a cabin with a murderer. The Blackening’s all-Black cast of characters must use their street smarts and horror movie knowledge to survive as Black characters are frequently the first to perish in horror films.
Antoinette Robertson, Dewayne Perkins, Sinqua Walls, Grace Byers, X Mayo, Melvin Gregg, Jermaine Fowler, Yvonne Orji, and Jay Pharoah are among the actors who appear in the movie.
Marcei A. Brown, Jason Clark, E. Brian Dobbins, Oliver, Story, and Sharla Sumpter Bridgett are the producers of the movie. Vicky Story is an associate producer, and Perkins is a co-producer.
