Rapper Drake makes surprise entry at ‘Backstreet Boys’concert in Toronto
Drake sent audiences into a frenzy after he joined Backstreet Boys on stage and performed one of the band’s classic numbers.
On Saturday night, Drake, 35, joined the band on stage to perform “I Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys during their stop in the rapper’s native Toronto, Canada.
Drake explained to the crowd why the Backstreet Boys’ song means so much to him after the group invited him out on stage as their “sixth member.”
“At 13 years old, I had a bar mitzvah, and at my bar mitzvah, for the first time in my life, this girl I was in love with came up to me while one of the greatest songs in the world was playing, and she asked me if I would dance with her,” he said, as seen in video footage shared online by a fan in attendance. “It was the first time I ever felt acknowledged, and it was the first time I ever felt like, you know, I had a shot at being cool.”
Drake playfully teased, “If she can see me now, you know what I’m talking about?” before he and the boy band began singing the classic tune.
Drake himself also took to Instagram to post a video of himself singing the band’s famed track “I Want It That Way” and in the captions wrote, “When she says she’s over men in this generation and asks why I live alone…” Drake also posted an Instagram story of a photo of him sharing the stage with the Backstreet Boys and wrote, “I really made it.”
The COVID-19 epidemic forced the Backstreet Boys’ DNA World Tour to end midway through its first 2019 run. The boy band’s tour was resumed in February 2022 with four performances in Las Vegas. Its members are Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean, and Kevin Richardson.
As videos from the Toronto performance were shared online, fans expressed their delight at the unexpected pairing of Drake and the Backstreet Boys, calling it a “surreal” experience to see them perform together. A Twitter user who posted a clip of their performance said, “This is the best and the coolest thing I’ve ever seen in my life!!!” Additionally, some commenters on Drake’s article demanded that a “Drake x Backstreet Boys” collaboration take place once more.
